Protecting Lake Maud

Protecting Lake Maud is a collaborative effort involving Lake Maud residents, Lake Eunice Township, the Becker County Coalition of Lake Associations (COLA) as well as many local and state agencies like Becker County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and Minnesota DNR. Key initiatives focus on water quality, habitat preservation, and preventing the spread of invasive species.

Property owners are encouraged to maintain natural vegetation buffers rather than mowing to the water’s edge. This reduces nutrient runoff, which can cause harmful algal blooms, and prevents shoreline erosion. Residents can take a Lake Steward quiz through Minnesota Lakes & Rivers Advocates to evaluate their property’s impact and potentially earn a Lake Steward award.

Always follow the “Clean In, Clean Out” protocol by draining all water and removing plants or mud from boats and trailers before moving to another body of water.

Lake Maud has active “Loon Watchers” who monitor and maintain nesting platforms. Boaters and kayakers should keep a distance of at least 200 yards from loon nests to prevent parents from abandoning their eggs.

Anglers can improve the fishery by harvesting small-to-moderate-sized fish for food while releasing larger, breeding-sized fish.
